How to configure iOS Restrictions with Kibosh.

You have protected an iOS device with Kibosh iOS VPN so that all Internet access is filtered at all times. Good, however there are a few more steps to ensure this protection is not bypassed.

What we don’t want is for the user to purposely, or accidentally install apps that tunnel through filters. Yes, there are apps designed just for this, but the solution is simple: the user must get permission to install an app. In general though, we all use the same apps every day, so once this device has all the essential apps you’ll rarely need to install anything else.

How to enforce Kibosh iOS VPN protection:

How it works: A Restriction simply removes the option from the home page of the device. So, turning off the App Store removes the App Store icon from the home screen. When we need to install an app, we disable the Restriction, install an app, then re-enable the Restriction.

  1. Install all the games, apps, etc. you want on this device. Of course you can add to this later, but each additional install will require you to enter your Restriction passcode.
    • Apps you don’t want to install:
      • YouTube because it does not honor their own SafeMode settings.
      • Any browser other than Safari, Chrome, or FireFox.
  2. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions
    1. Set a restrictions code – do not give this to the kids
      1. This is not the device Passcode
    2. Enable Restrictions.
      • NOTE: If the option is Green, then that option is NOT secure, i.make the option not Green to enable Restrictions.
      • NOTE: Turning on a Restriction will remove the app from the device. So, enabling Restrictions on the App Store will remove the App store app (probably not a bad thing overall).
      •  Default Restrictions to enable:
        • Installing Apps
        • Deleting Apps
        • In-App purchases
    3. NOTE: don’t go overboard with the restrictions or you’ll be entering the unlock code a lot. It will wear you down over time.
  3. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode
    1. Disable ‘use touch id’ for iTunes & App Store.

How to disable Restrictions to install more apps.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Restrictions
  2. Enter your unlock code
  3. Slide App Store to Green.
  4. Tap the Home button
  5. Now to into app store and install the app(s)
  6. Go back to Settings > General > Restrictions
  7. Slide App Store to off (not green)
